Mark, My words. A blog for Rationalist-Adjacent Musings, Short Fiction, thoughts and analysis of games, and thinking too hard about Marvel and pop media
They really just let anyone on this site
I plan to post an eclectic range of stuff, because SlateStarCodex doesn't have time to cover every topic, and someone's got to. Some sample musings to give you a taste:
Musings on reality: “If journalists had guts they would start each column walking back their headline by saying that their boss picked it to optimize for clicks, and spend at least a paragraph emphasizing how it oversimplifies their thesis.”
“Tired: A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of weaker minds.
Wired: A foolish consistency limits incremental evolution away from local minima by mandating that each step results in internal consistency, which effectively excludes hybrid solutions.”
Short Fiction: April 2020: “Because it's April Fool's no one will believe me when I say that Coronavirus is an emergency patch implemented on the Matrix to buy time to solve a scaling issue for our simulated reality. By forcing us to stay inside they're able to lower their rendering costs and scale horizontally without having to merge zones, effectively keeping most of us in bubble universes that don't cross over. If they are unable to complete their rewrite of fundamental physics in time, their backup plan is to permanently shard us into separate realities based upon ideology or other characteristics that make it easier to maintain a consensus reality, and permanently and irrevocably separate the human race.
Please socially distance or you risk dooming humanity.”
Games: “Review scores for games should either allow for live updates based upon ongoing expansions/patches/fixes, or not exist. Games are no longer static commodities shipped in a box that live forever in one form. Reviews have no reason to be either.”
“Social Media is a massively multiplayer video game where if you play it well, you collect virtual currencies called ‘likes’ and ‘followers’, and if you play it badly enough you lose your job.”
Thoughts on Media:
“Witcher is two layers of colonialism. Humans invade and abuse an indigenous population, and then Nilfgardians invade and abuse the first-level colonizers.”
Star Wars movies with ratings by critics/users on different sites in release order. The critic/audience divergence is interesting on both The Last Jedi and the Rise of Skywalker.
And in chronological order, making the whole series a bell curve centered on Episode V.
In the meantime, tell your friends!
